NEW JERSEY — Authorities have issued a scam alert warning residents about fraudulent calls related to an electric bill credit.
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) reported receiving complaints about callers posing as utility representatives, requesting personal and financial details to “sign up” for the credit.
About the $100 Credit
The recently approved $100 universal bill credit was introduced to help residents manage rising energy costs. However, the NJBPU clarified that no legitimate representative will call customers to enroll them in the program.
Eligible accounts will automatically receive the credit, which will be applied in two $50 installments on September and October utility bills.
What To Do If You Receive a Scam Call
These calls are designed to steal personal information. If you receive one, do not share any details.
Residents are advised to contact the NJBPU’s customer assistance division at 800-624-0241 to report suspicious activity.
