A Parsippany man drowned at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on Tuesday afternoon, marking the second reported drowning in New Jersey that day.
According to the National Park Service, the 30-year-old from Parsippany-Troy Hills was swimming with his family near the Kittatinny Point picnic area in Columbia when he became tired while trying to swim across the Delaware River and went under.
First responders quickly recovered his body from 17 feet of water and pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his identity.
The park service reminded visitors to always wear a properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jacket while swimming, fishing, boating, or floating on the Delaware River.
This marks the second drowning at the park this year. On July 10, a 54-year-old Pennsylvania man died after his kayak capsized about two miles downstream of the park’s Bushkill Access.
Tragedies continued across New Jersey waters. On the same day, a swimmer drowned off New York Avenue Beach in Lavallette under similar conditions. A rescuer on a jet ski saved a 39-year-old Totowa man, but he was later pronounced dead at Community Medical Center in Toms River.
Meanwhile, in Cape May, search crews are still looking for a swimmer who went missing on Thursday.
