NEW YORK — A federal appeals court has upheld an $83.3 million judgment against former President Donald Trump in a defamation case involving writer E. Jean Carroll.
The appellate panel rejected Trump’s claims that presidential immunity protected him from liability, ruling that he failed to provide any valid grounds for reconsideration.
A unanimous jury had previously awarded Carroll the damages after finding that Trump defamed her through public statements made during his first term and in the years following.
This ruling follows a separate 2022 verdict, where another jury determined that Trump was liable for sexually abusing Carroll and awarded her $5 million in damages.
Trump’s legal team argued that his remarks were part of his official presidential duties, but Carroll’s attorneys maintained that the statements were tied to his personal conduct and not related to his responsibilities as president.
The decision marks another significant legal setback for Trump as he continues to face multiple court battles.
