Federal prosecutors are seeking a seven-year prison sentence for Nadine Menendez in a high-profile bribery case involving her husband, former Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ). The case centers on alleged exchanges of cash, gold, a luxury car, and a fake paycheck, with prosecutors claiming Nadine played a key role in leveraging her husband’s political power for personal gain, including actions tied to U.S.-Egypt policy efforts.
Defense attorneys, however, argue that Nadine’s involvement has been exaggerated and are requesting a one-year sentence instead, citing her health issues and lesser culpability.
Prosecutors wrote, “The defendant’s extensive, deliberate, and exceedingly serious criminal conduct calls out for a substantial sentence. She corruptly agreed and promised that her boyfriend and then husband, a United States Senator, would use his power and his office to secretly act on behalf of the people who were lining their pockets.”
In contrast, Nadine’s legal team pushed back against the government’s portrayal:
“Despite all of the Government’s efforts to present her as a vixen, the reality is far from that. Her entire life has been marked by men who have taken advantage of her and harmed her in myriad ways. An extended sentence is not warranted, needed, or appropriate under these circumstances.”
Former Sen. Bob Menendez is currently serving an 11-year sentence for corruption, while two New Jersey businessmen involved in the scheme received seven- and eight-year sentences.
Prosecutors argue that the fake paycheck and Mercedes-Benz convertible allegedly obtained through bribes strengthen the case for a tougher penalty:
“In short, the defendant put the power of Menendez’s office up for sale in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes, including cash, gold, paychecks for a fake job, and a Mercedes-Benz convertible.”
