Dozens of residents were left without homes early Wednesday after a fire ripped through three buildings in Paterson, New Jersey.
The blaze started around 3:45 a.m. at 12 Elm St., just off Mill Street.
Tenant Ceaser Sotomayor said he believes it began in a third-floor kitchen. “The fire started in the kitchen. The people on the third floor. Everything was on fire,” he recalled.
The flames destroyed the top floor of the three-story building and spread to two neighboring homes.
At least 45 people had to evacuate. Some were later allowed back inside briefly to collect belongings.
The American Red Cross sent disaster responders to help those affected. “At this time, at least 45 people in 10 units have been displaced by the fire. We are providing comfort and care at a reception center as next steps are determined. We expect to provide all with emergency assistance to help with temporary lodging, food, clothing, and other immediate needs,” the organization said in a statement.
One resident said he woke up to the fire and tried to put it out with a bucket of water before realizing it was too strong. He quickly got his family out of the building.
No injuries were reported.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause. While demolition does not appear necessary, officials say repairs will take a long time.
