PHILADELPHIA — A fire in the Port Richmond neighborhood on Thursday night left a 67-year-old man dead and another man hospitalized, authorities said.
The blaze broke out at a rowhome on the 3200 block of Almond Street around 6:30 p.m. Three people were inside at the time. Firefighters rescued two men: a 67-year-old homebound bariatric man on the first floor and a 49-year-old man with special needs on the second floor. A third man escaped on his own.
The 67-year-old victim was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 49-year-old was treated for smoke inhalation.
Philadelphia Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael Richey said smoke alarms alerted the men to the fire. Clutter inside the home made the rescue more challenging, but crews contained the flames quickly.
Neighbor Edytia Gaviria expressed her shock and sorrow. “Just sad. Really no words to describe this,” she said. She recalled noticing the commotion and the smoke rising from nearby homes. “Life is unpredictable. Every day something can happen. We don’t know.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
