Steven Sanchez was fatally shot after exchanging gunfire with Jersey City Police Sgt. Ricardo Reyes on Friday, Sept. 5, along John F. Kennedy Boulevard near Clinton Avenue, according to New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin.
Sanchez was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead later that evening. Sgt. Reyes suffered a non-life-threatening injury.
Investigators recovered a compressed air pistol at the scene.
Platkin confirmed the investigation is ongoing. Under a 2019 law (N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107[a][2]), the Attorney General’s Office must investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with law enforcement or while the person is in custody. The law also requires the case to be presented to a grand jury to determine whether the officer or officers involved should face indictment.
