Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who often parts ways with his party on key issues, argued Sunday that calling Donald Trump an “autocrat” does more harm than good.
During a CNN interview with Manu Raju on Inside Politics, Fetterman criticized people who compare Trump to Hitler or suggest he wants to shred the U.S. Constitution. “This is not an autocrat. This is a product of a democratic election,” he said.
He argued Democrats lose credibility when they overuse inflammatory language. According to Fetterman, many Americans may disagree with Trump — but that doesn’t mean they’re fascists or that they want to tear apart constitutional norms.
Fetterman additionally suggested that rhetoric like this played a role in the last election losses for Democrats — they drifted away from average voters by using polarizing terms.
