Car owners will not be notified on the spot. Instead, citations will be mailed to the registered vehicle owner after Hoboken Parking Utility staff review the images.

How the Program Works

After a public education campaign wraps up this week, the city will begin camera enforcement along Washington Street between Observer Highway and Eighth Street. Automated cameras will target:

  • Double parking

  • Blocking bike lanes

  • Stopping in bus zones

  • Improper use of loading zones

Why the Change

Recent city data show:

  • Bike lanes are blocked an average of 4+ hours daily.

  • Bus stops are blocked about 158 times per day.

  • 68 double parking violations occur daily at each location.

  • 54% of loading zone use violates city code.

Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla said the program aims to reduce injuries or fatalities caused by illegal parking.

“Hoboken residents want a safer, more efficient Washington Street,” Bhalla said. “We cannot and must not wait for a serious injury or fatality caused by double parking in bike lanes or blocked crosswalks.”

Public Support and Precedent

A city survey found 75% of residents believe double parking poses serious safety risks, and 89% of cyclists regularly encounter double-parked cars in bike lanes.

Similar camera programs in Philadelphia, Miami and Pittsburgh have cut repeat violations significantly.

The System Behind the Fines

The automated system, authorized in 2024, captures violation images that are reviewed by city staff. If a clear infraction is confirmed, a citation is issued by mail to the vehicle’s registered owner.
