CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — As energy bills in Illinois double or even triple for some households, Ameren is stepping in to assist customers struggling to pay.
The utility company donated $2 million to low-income home energy assistance programs (LIHEAP). Eligible households with a combined gross income at or below 60% of the state median can receive aid toward their energy bills.
Ameren contributed the funds directly to local agencies administering LIHEAP, which will distribute the grants to qualifying households.
“We know some of our customers are struggling to pay their bills because of rising electric supply costs. We wanted to help with credits toward those bills, which is why we donated $2 million,” said Kim Bond, Ameren’s Manager of Energy Assistance.
Eligible customers can receive a $150 credit toward their energy bill. Funding is available while supplies last, and Ameren encourages households to apply quickly, as the next LIHEAP benefit will not be available until October.
