A mysterious loud boom rattled parts of northern New Jersey on Sunday night, marking the second unexplained incident in less than a week, leaving authorities puzzled.

Pequannock Police Chief Daniel Comune said the department received multiple calls reporting what sounded like an explosion but couldn’t locate its source.

“My understanding is that it was heard by the entire town and surrounding areas as far as West Milford,” Comune said. “So with that said, it very well may have been in another town.”

Police in nearby Pompton Lakes also reported having no information about the loud sound, which was heard shortly before 9:20 p.m.

Officials at the Picatinny Arsenal, which spans Jefferson and Rockaway townships, confirmed Monday morning that no nighttime operations were conducted.

Last week, residents in and around Hopatcong reported seeing a flash of light followed by an explosion shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday. Police there received several calls, complaints, and videos about the noise but found no damage or other issues during their investigation.

The American Meteor Society confirmed no meteors were reported in New Jersey during either the Hopatcong or Pequannock incidents. However, four separate reports noted a fireball sighting over New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Meteorologist Michael Priante from WeatherWorks in Hackettstown ruled out weather-related causes for Sunday’s noise.

“It could be a multitude of things, but nothing weather related,” Priante said, confirming there were no lightning strikes or storms near Morris or Passaic counties.
