HAMBURG, N.Y. — Students in New York State’s public and charter schools will now have access to free breakfast and lunch as the state launches its first-ever statewide free school meals program this school year.

“This opportunity to get a meal at school is super meaningful for all of our students, regardless of their background,” said Tom Adams, superintendent of the Hamburg Central School District.

Statewide Program Covers 2.7 Million Students

The initiative ensures that all 2.7 million students attending public and charter schools in New York will have access to free, nutritious meals every day.

Dr. Darren Brown-Hall, superintendent of the Williamsville Central School District, highlighted the importance of the program:

“We know how important nutrition is for our students and families. A good breakfast helps students start their day smoothly and improves learning throughout the school day.”

Boosting Learning and Well-Being

Educators believe the program will not only reduce hunger but also enhance focus, energy, and overall academic performance.

“We’re excited that students can work on full stomachs and make better food choices,” Adams added. “It creates a healthier learning environment and benefits the overall school atmosphere.”

No Cost, No Extra Paperwork — But Forms Still Encouraged

The program comes at no direct cost to schools or families. Students do not need to submit free-meal applications to participate.

However, Adams encourages parents to still complete the forms, as the data helps districts secure grant funding from both Albany and Washington.

Preparing for the New School Year

The Hamburg Central School District is set to welcome more than 3,000 students on Wednesday. Adams said providing free meals also supports students’ basic needs, referencing Maslow’s Hierarchy:

“Feeling safe and cared for starts with having a full stomach. That’s a big part of helping students succeed.”
