GARFIELD, N.J. — Two men are in custody after a broad-daylight street shootout in Garfield on September 2 that ended with one suspect walking into a hospital for treatment, according to prosecutors.
The exchange of seven gunshots occurred at Palisade Avenue and Somerset Street, where investigators determined the two suspects fired at each other before fleeing. No victims were found at the scene, but detectives later identified the shooters as Mikhi Maddox Odum, 20, of Garfield, and Jonathan M. Ortiz, also of Garfield.
Ortiz remained at large until Sunday afternoon, when he arrived at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck around 2:30 p.m. seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to his arm. Hospital staff alerted authorities, leading police to connect his injury to the Garfield shootout. Ortiz was treated, arrested, and later booked into the Bergen County Jail pending a court appearance.
Meanwhile, prosecutors filed a first-degree attempted murder charge against Odum on Monday, citing Ortiz’s injury. Odum, who was already in custody on earlier weapons charges, was served with the new charge at the Bergen County Jail, where he remains pending a detention hearing.
Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella thanked multiple agencies, including Garfield Police, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, the Regional SWAT Team, Port Authority Police, and Teaneck Police, for their roles in the investigation and arrests.
