BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — An Illinois man faces serious charges after allegedly giving his pregnant girlfriend abortion medication without her consent, resulting in a miscarriage.
Emerson Evans, 31, was taken to the McLean County Detention Facility on Monday to await a hearing, according to Bloomington police.
Authorities say Evans administered abortion-inducing drugs to the woman without her knowledge. Police responded Friday to a medical emergency involving a pregnant person and found the woman in her apartment, visibly upset, with a significant amount of blood. She was reportedly about seven weeks pregnant.
Court documents and local media reports indicate that Evans told police he was “helping make the decision for her” and believed she knew he was giving her the medication. He reportedly purchased mifepristone from a “girl on campus” for around $50, though the specific campus was not identified.
Evans has been charged with two counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child, a crime under Illinois law that carries the same potential punishment as first-degree murder — 20 to 60 years in prison.
