Drivers 11+ mph over the limit face warnings, $75 and $150 fines
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana drivers now face stricter speed enforcement on additional interstate stretches as the state expands its Safe Zones program starting today, September 15.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), new automated speed enforcement began this morning on:
-
I-70 in Hancock County between mile markers 105 and 109 near Greenfield.
-
I-80/90 (Indiana Toll Road) in Steuben County between mile markers 142 and 143 near Fremont.
The program also continues on I-465/I-69 in Marion County.
Under the initiative, vehicles traveling 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit in designated construction zones will be flagged by automated systems. Drivers will receive violation notices by mail:
-
First offense: Warning notice.
-
Second offense: $75 fine.
-
Third or subsequent offenses: $150 fine.
INDOT says the program has cut excessive speeding by 70% at existing sites. “Creating safer conditions for both drivers and road workers is our goal,” INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist said. “Lower speeds are a huge factor in that effort.”
Authorized by state lawmakers in 2023, the Safe Zones program sends all fines collected to Indiana’s General Fund. INDOT notes that advance warning signs are posted before each active enforcement zone to alert drivers.
