Indiana State Police are warning the public about an increase in scams linked to Facebook Marketplace and high-value investments.
Authorities advise residents not to send money through Apple Pay, Venmo, wire transfers, or similar services for items they haven’t seen in person or from sellers contacted only via messenger. They recommend asking questions and arranging in-person meetings before making any payments.
Police also warn that phone calls from sellers don’t guarantee legitimacy since scammers can easily spoof phone numbers using free apps.
The public is urged never to grant remote access to their computers or share banking information and passwords with strangers. Legitimate companies will never request such access. If someone claims your computer has a virus and asks for control, officials advise hanging up immediately.
Deals that seem too good to be true — such as cheap cars, electronics, or other valuables — are often scams. If sellers refuse to provide extra photos or avoid meeting in person, police say it’s a major red flag.
Their key advice: do thorough research, seek advice from friends or family, and stay cautious to protect your finances.
