The Indiana Supreme Court has scheduled October 10 as the execution date for Roy Lee Ward, who was convicted of raping and killing 15-year-old Stacy Payne in 2001.
Investigators said Ward waited until Payne’s parents left for work before approaching their home, pretending he was looking for a lost dog to gain entry. Once inside, he raped and murdered the teenager.
A jury initially sentenced Ward to death in 2002, but the conviction was later overturned. In 2007, Ward pleaded guilty and was resentenced to death. Since then, his execution has been delayed multiple times due to appeals, including legal disputes over Indiana’s lethal injection process.
With all appeals exhausted, the state’s high court ordered that Ward’s execution be carried out before sunrise on October 10 at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City.
