Police shot a man accused of opening fire on the streets of Jersey City on Friday afternoon.

Hudson County officials reported that Jersey City Police officers came under fire around 1:20 p.m. while driving marked patrol cars southbound on JFK Boulevard near Clinton Avenue. Authorities say the armed suspect fired several shots, striking both police vehicles.

Sources told Eyewitness News that while under fire, a Jersey City Police sergeant exited his vehicle, confronted the gunman, and returned fire. According to officials, the suspect randomly opened fire on four officers in two separate marked vehicles. Police were not pursuing him and had not engaged with him before the attack.

Witnesses said the suspect was shot and rushed to a nearby hospital, though his condition remains unknown. One witness described the chaotic scene, saying the suspect was spraying bullets across JFK Boulevard.

“He had a gun on him and then the gun went off, everybody ran. I saw him pulling out the gun, aiming at people, shooting,” one witness recalled.

Another witness, identified as Carlos, said the suspect even pointed a gun at him. “He had a gun in his hand, he was just shooting at random vehicles, and at one point, he aimed it at me,” he said.

Eyewitnesses also reported hearing police order the suspect to drop his weapon before officers shot him twice. A video recorded by bystanders captured police repeatedly commanding him to put down the gun.

“He started crawling after he got shot and was still resisting,” Carlos added.

Officials confirmed that no civilians were injured during the incident, and none of the four officers targeted by gunfire were struck. However, the officers were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment for trauma.

Authorities have not yet determined the suspect’s motive. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said a thorough investigation is underway and urged anyone with information to come forward.
