A Jersey City woman has started a GoFundMe campaign in hopes of avoiding homelessness after illness and flooding left her unable to support herself.
“This support means the world to me because, whilst the incredible series of events that led to this horrible situation have crippled me both physically and mentally, the kindness of others has given me some small hope,” Aherne said in a statement.
According to the GoFundMe page, Aherne was diagnosed with ischemic stroke, congestive heart failure, chronic lung issues, and an autoimmune disease. Her struggles began after a 2016 flood, when her home insurance failed to provide funds for repairs.
“Since then, I’ve been living in heartbreaking conditions—with no working toilet, shower, stove, or refrigerator. Much of my home remains torn apart, with my belongings packed into corners for lack of space. Sometimes, I don’t even have running water,” she wrote.
Aherne explained that she has drained all her savings trying to keep up with mortgage payments and daily survival. Now, she has fallen behind, and foreclosure is expected within the next couple of months.
She lives with her dog, Clarke, who is both blind and deaf.
Aherne set a fundraising goal of $30,000 and has raised $13,956 so far from 55 donors.
