A 36-year-old Norristown man is in custody after allegedly grabbing a high school student’s arm while she waited for her school bus Tuesday morning in the Swedesburg section of Upper Merion Township.
The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m., according to Superintendent Dr. Tamara Thomas Smith. The student reported that a man approached her at the bus stop and grabbed her arm.
Neighbor Nicole Yacovetti recalled hearing distressing sounds:
“We heard screaming and crying coming from the corner of my street,” she said. “My neighbor came out, and we tried to console this girl. I don’t know who she was. She was just crying, saying, ‘Somebody tried to take my little sister.'”
The student managed to break free and immediately called her mother, who rushed to the scene. She later identified the suspect, who was taken into custody.
“We are proud of our student for her quick and decisive actions,” Smith said.
The incident shocked residents in the normally quiet area near Bridgeport. Chuck Dinolfi, a local resident, said, “That doesn’t happen in this area. It’s not like that around here. It’s pretty quiet.”
Upper Merion police said the suspect faces misdemeanor disorderly conduct and harassment charges. He remains in jail Tuesday night after being unable to post bail.
