A man was killed and several others were injured Tuesday afternoon after a car crashed into a Planet Fitness gym in Elizabeth, officials said.
According to Elizabeth City spokeswoman Ruby Contreras, the incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. at the gym on Newark Avenue. A 69-year-old woman was driving the vehicle when it slammed into the front of the building.

The driver, who has not been publicly identified, suffered injuries from airbag deployment, Contreras said.
The victim, a 72-year-old man, was near the front window when the car broke through the business, resulting in his death. Another victim, a 59-year-old man exercising on a treadmill, sustained cuts and abrasions during the crash.
The Elizabeth Police Department is investigating the incident, and officials confirmed that all parties are cooperating with authorities.
The city’s construction official has closed the gym until further notice due to building damage.
