(WPTA) — Health officials have confirmed that mosquito pools across 21Country have tested positive for the West Nile Virus as testing for mosquito-borne illnesses continues in Indiana.
One of the most recent detections came from Steuben County, where four mosquito pools tested positive at the end of July.
According to the Indiana Department of Health, there are no reported human cases of West Nile Virus in northeast Indiana so far. However, officials warn that mosquitoes will remain active as long as temperatures stay above 60°F, increasing the risk of bites and potential virus transmission.
Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, including:
-
Using insect repellents containing DEET
-
Eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed
-
Wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity hours
The risk of West Nile Virus remains until cooler fall and winter temperatures reduce mosquito activity.
