New York, NY — An off-duty NYPD officer was killed Wednesday morning after a box truck struck his motorcycle and fled the scene on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE), police sources confirmed.
The fatal crash occurred around 8:27 a.m. near Exit 27 at Atlantic Avenue. The 30-year-old officer was riding his motorcycle westbound when the truck slammed into him, causing the bike to burst into flames, according to authorities.
Medics rushed the officer to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead.
Sources said the officer was on his way home from work at the time of the collision.
The Police Benevolent Association (PBA) released a statement mourning the tragedy:
“Devastated by the loss of our brother following an off-duty motorcycle crash in Brooklyn this morning. Please join us in praying for his family, friends, and co-workers as they deal with this unimaginable loss.”
The BQE has been completely shut down at Exit 27 as investigators work the scene.
Authorities are actively searching for the hit-and-run driver, and the investigation remains ongoing.
