INDIANA — A high-speed police pursuit ended in a serious crash early Sunday, August 31, leaving one person critically injured, according to the Indiana State Police.
The incident began when a white Mercedes, suspected of being involved in an attempted break-in in Columbia City, fled a traffic stop. Troopers later spotted the car traveling south on State Road 9 in Whitley County. When officers attempted to pull the driver over, the suspect sped away, triggering a police chase.
The pursuit continued onto County Road 200 East, which becomes Meridian Road in Huntington County. Police said the driver turned off the vehicle’s lights before losing control and crashing into a utility pole. The driver, who was the sole occupant, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The Indiana State Police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Huntington and Whitley County Sheriff’s Departments, South Whitley Police, Parkview EMS, Samaritan, and Smiths Towing.
