A Paterson man has been charged in connection with a fatal overdose that occurred in April, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Gaston Navarro, 40, was charged on Aug. 20 with first-degree strict liability for drug-induced death and third-degree distribution of fentanyl, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced. At the time of the charges, Navarro was already in custody at the Bergen County Jail on an unrelated matter.
Police responded to a residence in Garfield on April 24 around 6:43 p.m. for a medical emergency and found a 41-year-old man unresponsive. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities noted evidence of a possible overdose.
A joint investigation by detectives from the prosecutor’s office and Garfield police determined that the victim consumed a controlled substance containing a lethal dose of fentanyl. Navarro was later identified as the person who supplied the drugs.
Navarro remains at the Bergen County Jail, awaiting a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
