CAMDEN, N.J. — Three relatives have been arrested and charged in the killing of a missing Deptford man whose body has not been recovered, officials announced Thursday.
Everton Thomas, 41, of Camden, is charged with first-degree murder, desecration of human remains, and tampering with physical evidence in the death of 48-year-old Harold “Hal” Miller Jr. His wife, Sherrie Parker, 41, and his son, Deshawn Thomas, 22, face charges of desecration of human remains and evidence tampering.
Disappearance and investigation
Miller was last seen playing cards in Camden on June 12. His car was later discovered abandoned in Pennsauken on June 14. Detectives said surveillance footage and cell phone data showed Miller entering a Camden home on Baird Boulevard that morning — but he was never seen leaving. Shortly afterward, video captured what appeared to be a gunshot.
Police allege Everton Thomas later moved Miller’s car to Pennsauken. Investigators say Sherrie Parker and Deshawn Thomas were seen buying a chainsaw, containers, trash bags, and cleaning supplies after Miller entered the home. Surveillance footage also showed Everton and Deshawn making multiple trips to dumpsters with containers and bags.
Witness accounts and evidence
A witness told investigators that Deshawn admitted his father asked him to help “chop up” a body. Another reported a strong odor of decomposition and the sound of power tools coming from the basement. That witness recalled Parker saying, “A wife gotta do what she gotta do.”
Police later found suspected bloodstains inside the home, and forensic testing confirmed the DNA matched Miller. During a June 20 search, Everton was also found with a loaded firearm. He fled to Canada the next day but was arrested Sept. 5 at the Port of Buffalo when crossing back into the U.S. by bus.
Arrests and custody
Sherrie Parker and Deshawn Thomas were taken into custody in Camden on Monday and are being held at the Camden County Correctional Facility. Everton Thomas is being held in New York pending extradition.
