The Missouri State Highway Patrol has identified the man killed early Saturday after a police chase ended in a crash on Interstate 35 in Clay County.
The incident began around 1:20 a.m. on August 30 when a trooper spotted a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV driving northbound on I-35 near Chouteau Trafficway. The driver, later identified as 41-year-old Samuel Holmes IV of Kansas City, Kansas, appeared to be intoxicated.
When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, Holmes refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit. Shortly after, troopers used a “tactical vehicle intervention” to end the chase. Holmes lost control of the SUV, which veered off the right side of the road, crashed into a ditch, and overturned.
Holmes was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. No troopers were injured during the incident.
Authorities temporarily closed the interstate while investigating the crash. As of Monday night, the Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
