A woman was shot and killed Friday evening in Center City Philadelphia, and one person is in custody, police confirmed.
The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. near the corner of 12th and Chestnut streets, in front of a 7-Eleven. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight along the busy corridor, was captured on video.
Casey Boultinghouse, a nearby resident, said he was heading out for a bike ride when he heard gunfire.
“This is not the area that you typically hear things like this happening,” Boultinghouse said. “I had just stepped outside when I heard it and started riding down Chestnut.”
Police said the woman was rushed to Jefferson Hospital but was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later. Her identity has not yet been released.
Video of the incident shows three people involved. One woman appears to try pulling a man away from another woman, and moments later, the man is seen pointing a gun at the woman on the ground. Witnesses can be heard reacting in shock, with one exclaiming, “Oh my God!”
Investigators have not confirmed how the individuals are connected or what triggered the shooting. Sources say police are looking into whether one of the women was initially armed and whether the gun was taken from her during the confrontation.
“They hauled the girl off in the ambulance — that happened really quick,” Boultinghouse said. “The hospitals are close by, so they got her loaded up fast.”
Evidence markers at the scene indicated at least two shots were fired. Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been announced.
Some witnesses told investigators they had seen the individuals before and believe they may be part of the homeless community.
