Philadelphia police are investigating after a 43-year-old Wingstop employee was shot by a customer inside the restaurant on the 7600 block of City Avenue in Overbrook on Sunday evening.
The incident happened around 5:20 p.m., when a group of male customers got into a verbal altercation with the worker. According to Inspector Michael Gormley, one of the men threw a bottle at the employee and then fired a shot as they were leaving.
The woman, who sustained a graze wound, declined medical treatment and chose not to go to the hospital, saying the injury wasn’t serious.
Police stopped some members of the group nearby and took one person into custody but are still searching for two suspects believed to have fled in a white Toyota.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the restaurant to identify the shooter.
“It’s a tragic thing when somebody is going to work, trying to raise a family, pay some bills, and they get hurt like that,” Gormley said.
Moses Luciano, a Wingstop maintenance worker, confirmed the restaurant has surveillance cameras and said the door was shattered during the incident.
“It’s a crazy time,” Luciano added. “People get frustrated and angry over stupid things, and they react stupidly.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
